Andre Ward Announces his Next Fight

Andre Ward Getting Back in the Ring

Andre Ward Risks
WBA Super Middleweight Title
Against Undefeated Edwin Rodriguez
on Saturday, November 16, 2013 from
Citizens Business Bank Arena
in Ontario, CA
Televised Live on HBO®

SHERMAN OAKS, CA (September 20, 2013) - Following slightly more than a year's absence from the ring due to injury, Bay Area hero, 2004 U.S. Olympic gold medalist and current WBA and Ring Magazine World Super Middleweight Champion, Andre "S.O.G." Ward makes his highly anticipated return to the ring defending his title against Edwin Rodriguez on Saturday, November 16 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA.

Simply and appropriately billed as "The Return," Ward (26-0, 13 KOs) will risk his title against the undefeated Rodriguez (24-0, 16 KOs) in the scheduled 12-round World Championship main event which will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Tickets are priced at $200, $125, $75, $50 and $25 (parking included with purchase) and will be available at Citizens Business Bank Arena Box Office or online at or by calling AXS at 888-929-7849 starting on Friday, September 27.  For more information, please visit

Following last year's 10th-round destruction of then-WBC Light Heavyweight titleholder Chad Dawson in his biggest and most impressive defense of both his WBA and WBC belts in his hometown of Oakland on September 8, Ward was scheduled to take on former WBC/WBO Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik back in January.  However, the bout had to be scrapped because Ward required surgery to an injured right shoulder, keeping Ward out of the ring for over 12 months and costing him an intriguing fight and sending Pavlik into retirement.

With Ward's Super-Six Tournament demolition through the 168-pound division against the likes of Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, Allan Green, Sakio Bika and Carl Froch, Ward now puts his attention toward the currently ranked #1 WBC, #3 WBA, IBF and WBO Rodriguez.

"I'm excited to get back in the ring on November 16," stated the champion Ward. "The opponent is Edwin Rodriguez. He's a young, hungry, undefeated fighter who doesn't believe he can lose and it's my job to change his mind. I think he and his team feel like they are going to catch me slipping coming off of surgery and the layoff. I try to live like a champion.  I stay in the gym, eat well, and don't abuse my body and this rest that I got was needed. I don't feel like the layoff will hurt me, I feel like it will help me. It allowed me to rest mentally and physically, and I want to show the fans on November 16 that I'm better than I was before I left."

So now the 29-year old Ward can't wait to make his return against the Dominican-born super middleweight, who now lives in Worcester, Mass.  Having made a huge statement in his last bout stopping Denis Grachev in the first round in Monte Carlo, France winning the "Monaco Million Dollar Super Four Tournament" - Rodriguez, 28, will be fighting for the first time in California.  In his most recent outing, the undefeated Rodriguez known as "La Bomba, " handled Grachev from the opening bell. The normally durable Grachev went down twice in the first round and was taking further punishment when referee Stanley Christodoulou stepped in to stop the one-sided bout.  Grachev was coming off impressive wins over highly-touted Californian Ismayl Sillakh, and also ended former champion Zsolt Erdei's undefeated run. With the victory, the DiBella-promoted Rodriguez has propelled his name toward the top of the 168-pound division targeting Ward in the process.

"Vince Lombardi once said, 'Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man.  But sooner or later, the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.' On November 16th, I know I will win," stated Edwin Rodriguez.

"I commend Andre Ward for accepting a huge challenge after an injury and layoff.  On November 16th, he will wish he didn't when he gets La-Bombed by La Bomba," said longtime promoter Lou DiBella.

Some strong words from the #1 world-rated Rodriguez proclaiming the demise of the #2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Ward probably summed it up best, "You have a young fighter in Edwin Rodriguez that feels like it's his time. You have a young veteran in myself that feels like it's still my time, and those ingredients will make for a blockbuster fight on November 16 on HBO."

All other bouts will be announced shortly.  Doors open at 3 p.m. with the first undercard fight set at 3:15 p.m.

The event is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with S.O.G. Promotions.  The Ward-Rodriguez bout is presented in association with DiBella Entertainment and sponsored by Morongo Casino Resort Spa and the City of Ontario.

"We are proud to be a sponsor to this great boxing event featuring WBA and Ring Magazine Supermiddleweight World Champion Andre Ward," stated Morongo Casino Resort Spa General Manager, David Brents.

Competing in non-televised bouts will be Las Vegas talents, Luis "Cuba" Arias, Ronald "The Thrill" Gavril, Lanell Bellows and Andrew "Beast" Tabiti, as well as Ohio standout Chris "Sweet" Pearson.

"The fighters we have on this card are some of the most exciting and talented in the sport today," said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. "Before Floyd and Canelo get into the ring, these up and comers are going to fight their hearts out and show why we'll be seeing a lot more of them in the coming years."

"Saturday night's fight card is going to be electric from start to finish," said Oscar De La Hoya, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "Giving these young fighters the opportunity to showcase their talent on this monstrous card is what being a promoter is all about - giving the future of the sport a chance to become stars."

Arreola Scores 1st RD KO over Seth Mitchell

Chris Arreola said he is his own worst enemy but he proved tonight that with good training he can compete with the best that the Heavyweight division has to offer as he knocked out Seth Mitchell in the First round Live on Showtime. Arreola looked to be in much better shape than he has been in the past and all his hard work paid off as did his experience. Once he had Mitchell hurt, he ponced on him and wouldn't give him any time to recover finally forcing the fight to be stopped as Mitchell couldn't properly defend himself. Arreola boosts his record to 36-3 with 31 KO's.

Mitchell vs. Arreola Tonight on Showtime

Tonight the big boys are going toe to toe!  Could this be the fight we are looking for?  I think the fans will be impressed with these two warriors.  Arreola said, "If I lose this fight I might retire".

Golden Boy Fights Recap

Undefeated Leo Santa Cruz Captures WBC Super Bantamweight Crown
With Third-Round Knockout Over Defending Champion Victor Terrazas;
Replay Is Tomorrow, Sunday, Aug. 25, at 9 a.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME®

CARSON, Calif. (Aug. 24, 2013) - In a leading candidate for Upset of the Year - and possible Knockout of the Year - former two-division world champion and knockout artist Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KO's) registered a stunning 2:55, first-round knockout over previously unbeaten Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14 KO's) Saturday on SHOWTIME® before 7,686 loud and enthusiastic fans at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Gonzalez's shocking upset victory in the WBC featherweight title fight sets up a possible showdown with Leo Santa Cruz (25-0-1, 15 KO's), who scored two knockdowns en route to an impressive third-round knockout over defending WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas (37-3-1, 21 KO's) in the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING co-feature.

"This moment right now is the single greatest and most glorious moment of my life," said an elated Gonzalez, who reclaimed the 126-pound belt he once held and breathed new life into his career with the win over his former training partner. "When I came to the United States for this fight no one gave me any credit. All they talked about was Mares fighting Santa Cruz. I didn't say anything but I knew I was getting disrespected."

Both Gonzalez, from Mexico City, Mexico, and the former WBC featherweight champion, Mares of Downey, Calif., by way of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, each came out aggressively. Halfway through the opening round, Gonzalez connected with a solid left hook Mares never saw coming, dropping him to the canvas and leading to an eight-count. After Mares made it to his feet, Gonzalez landed another of punches that ended with a left hook and a right cross that knocked Mares backwards. Referee Jack Reiss stepped in and stopped the fight with five seconds to go in the first round.

"I knew I had him badly hurt after the first knockdown," Gonzalez said.

"I'm good," said Mares, who held titles at 118 and 122 pounds before claiming the featherweight belt last May. He was making his eighth consecutive appearance on SHOWTIME. "You have to win and you have to learn how to lose in this sport. I'm not in the sport to remain undefeated, but I'm here to fight the best.

"I was alright with the ref's decision. He did his job and I respect it. But I thought I could go on," he added. "Now I'm going to take a break and enjoy my family."

Like Gonzalez, Santa Cruz of Los Angeles, by way of Huetamo, Michoacan, Mexico, went to work early and often against Terrazas, throwing 267 punches in just two and a half rounds. Terrazas, of Guadalajara, was cut just under the right eye in the second round and Santa Cruz took advantage landing punch after punch, finally sending Terrazas down for a nine-count, and then again for an eight-count midway through the third. Referee Lou Moret halted matters at 2:09 of the third round.

"This is a dream come true," said Santa Cruz, 25, who had fought 106 fewer rounds in his career than Terrazas, who is 30. "I've wanted the green belt my entire life. Once I saw the eye start to swell I knew I had to go after him and put the pressure on him."

Terrazas said, "The eye was not a problem. This was a good fight. He was tough like I expected. He just caught me. I wanted to continue the fight."

Earlier on SHOWTIME EXTREME Antonio Orozco (18-0, 14 KO's), San Diego, Calif., overpowered Ivan Hernandez (29-3, 22 KO's), Miami, Fla., in round three of a scheduled 10-round junior welterweight bout.

In a battle of featherweights, 2012 U.S. Olympian Joseph "Jo Jo'' Diaz Jr. (7-0, 5 KO's) of South El Monte, Calif., looked impressive in a third-round knockout over Noel Mendoza (6-3-1, 1 KO), of Phoenix, Ariz., the referee stopping the bout at 1:54 of the third of the scheduled six-round bout. Diaz knocked Mendoza down with a left cross, right hook combo that sent Mendoza to the canvas for good.

In the first SHOWTIME EXTREME bout between heavyweights, 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic Breazeale (6-0, 6 KO's), of Los Angeles, passed the stiffest test of his young career and remained undefeated with his sixth consecutive knockout, this one coming on a TKO in the fifth round against Lenroy Thomas (16-3, 8 KO's) of St. Catherine, Jamaica.

Brian Kenny hosted the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast, with Mauro Ranallo calling the action, Al Bernstein and Paulie Malignaggi serving as expert analysts and Jim Gray reporting. Barry Tompkins called the SHOWTIME EXTREME action with Steve Farhood serving as expert analyst. Alejandro Luna called the blow-by-blow for SAP with Raul Marquez serving as color commentator.

The fights will be available ON DEMAND beginning tomorrow, Aug. 25.

ATLANTIC CITY, NY (August 13, 2013) - WBO No. 4 ranked featherweight contender Joel Brunker (26-0, 15KOs) will aim to keep his undefeated record intact when he competes this Saturday on the undercard of the Gary Shaw Productions promoted HBO Boxing After Dark event that features an IBF middleweight title clash between Daniel Geale and Darren Barker.  The card is being held at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the arena's first boxing event, making it a momentous occasion supported by a stellar card.
Brunker will square off against battle-tested Mike Oliver (25-4, 8 KOs) in a 10-round affair.  Oliver's last 2 fights were losing efforts against Juan Manuel Lopez and Billy Dib, but the fact that he has been in the ring with quality opponents suggests that he will give Brunker a true barometer opportunity.
"It's all about getting better and preparing myself accordingly for each fight," said Brunker.  "I feel like if I can make habits out of working hard and staying focused on the opponent in front of me then it will give me the best chance to make winning a constant occurrence."
"Mike isn't just my next opponent, I feel like he is a rite of passage and he'll have to pay for that.  It's hard to keep a balance between what is business and what is personal, but I'm in the business of running through people standing in my way and if you take it personal then so be it," Brunker continued.
It's apparent that Brunker is in a solid mental state, prepared for battle and ready to put on a show, but his future is too bright to be merely disregarded.
"Of course I think of what's next or on the horizon, but I don't get caught up on it. I trust my promoters Gary Shaw and Ace Boxing's Angelo DiCarlo who are the people in charge of my career.   I know that they know the sport and more importantly they know fighters.  My physical and mental preparation is beginning to coincide with my readiness for a title shot.  The willingness is there, trust me.  But I don't want to be over eager, we'll just say I've got my eyes on the belt holders and if they were smart they'd keep their eye on me as well," Brunker said.
Brunker seems to believe that success is just a matter of time.  For now he appears adequate in his current endeavors, but Gary Shaw seems to believe Brunker's time to prove his upper echelon status is upon him.
"Joel has been on people's radars for quite some time now and he's been on a number of must watch lists as well as several future prospect lists over the past several years, and rightfully so," Gary Shaw stated.  "He is a tremendous talent, capable of reshaping the current state of the division in a single performance, but that performance will have to come against a fighter with an established reputation, that's how Joel will prove he is an elite competitor.  Let's see what he does Saturday, then we'll move forward and that move's level of seriousness may directly reflect Saturday's outcome.  Be there or risk missing the birth of a star."
Tickets prices start at $30 and are on sale now at all Ticketmaster locations, online at and by calling 1-800-745-3000.  The HBO Boxing After Dark telecast will begin at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.
